Our Journey
Transforming community-owned waste management systems across Bali
We started Rethinking Recycling with a pilot in the community of Sanur Kauh with around 8,000 people and have now expanded to our first cohort which will reach nearly 130,000 people across 6 communities, with plans underway for our second cohort and more.
2019
Desa Kedas (Clean Village)
In 2019 we launched Desa Kedas, our pilot program in Bali, Indonesia. Together, with the community of Sanur Kauh we transformed their community-owned waste management system driving improved household sorting behaviors, optimized collection and sorting operations and providing better jobs and wages for workers and community leaders. Through our work we have almost doubled workers wages and helped provide them access to critical social programs such as healthcare.2020
Rethinking Recycling Academy - Denpasar Kedas (Cohort 1)
Building off the success of the Desa Kedas Pilot initiative, Rethinking Recycling developed a holistic scalable capability building program called the Rethinking Recycling Academy. Using the same community-based principles as our pilot program, the Rethinking Recycling Academy provides a holistic, digital capability building program and on-the ground support to transform community-owned recycling and composting facilities. The Academy launched its first cohort of 6 communities, Denpasar Kedas (Clean Denpasar), in September 2020.Participating villages in the Academy's Cohort 1

Rethinking Recycling Academy - Cohort 2
Rethinking Recycling plans to launch its second Academy cohort in Bali in 2021 with plans to drive increased scalability, speed to impact and coverage across Bali. Follow our newsletter to hear more as our cohort 2 develops.
2022 and beyond
Leveraging the scalability of our program, the Rethinking Recycling Academy has intentions to expand our reach throughout Indonesia, Asia and beyond.
